December 8, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations Under the coordination of the GTU Accessibility Division, a meaningful awareness visit is carried out on Friday, December 5, 2025, with our undergraduate students to the Dialogue in the Dark and Dialogue in the Silence Museums located in Gayrettepe. Organized as part of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the event provides a powerful learning environment that enable students to understand the concept of disability through direct experience.
During the Dialogue in the Dark experience, students advanced through a completely dark environment guided by a visually-impaired facilitator and perceived different aspects of daily life using only their remaining senses. This setting allowed them to deeply recognize how vital communication, orientation, trust, and cooperation become when visual perception is absent. Through the communication and interaction they built in the dark, participants had the opportunity to more realistically evaluate the challenges visually-impaired individuals face in everyday life.
In the Dialogue in the Silence section, students were guided by a hearing-impaired facilitator in an environment where the sense of hearing was completely absent. This experience highlighted the importance of body language, facial expressions, gestures, and alternative communication methods, enabling students to explore different dimensions of communication. The interactive process carried out in silence created a highly effective awareness of the communication barriers faced by hearing-impaired individuals in social life.
The event offered an exceptionally instructive experience that strengthened our students’ ability to empathize and cultivated sensitivity toward the lived experiences of different individuals within society.
The visit was organized with the support of master's students involved in one of the project groups of the Ethics in Business Life course within the Non-Thesis Master’s Program in Management. The GTU Accessibility Division expressed its gratitude to the graduate students who have contributed to the project. |
