Scientific contribution to AI-supported prostate cancer research comes from Assoc. Prof. Özgün Yücel, a faculty member of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Gebze Technical University (GTU). The study, in which Yücel participated as a researcher, is published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology under the title “Lymph Node Invasion Prediction in Prostate Cancer: A Comparative Machine-Learning Study.”

The study aimed to improve the preoperative prediction of lymph node invasion in prostate cancer by comparatively evaluating various machine learning models. The AI-based model developed provides higher accuracy and specificity compared to existing clinical nomograms, aiming to offer more effective prognostic guidance for patient treatment planning.

The research highlighted the advantages of AI algorithms in processing clinical data, noting that the Random Forest model demonstrated the most successful performance in predicting lymph node metastasis. These findings indicate significant potential in reducing unnecessary lymph node dissections and more accurately identifying patients at risk of metastasis.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital and Prof. Dr. Cemil Taşcıoğlu City Hospital Urology Clinics. Assoc. Prof. Özgün Yücel from GTU’s Department of Chemical Engineering contributed to data analysis and modeling processes.
