November 28, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations Gebze Technical University (GTU) Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences, in collaboration with the Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality (KBB) Department of Environmental Protection and Control, successfully completes the project titled “Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Water Quality Changes in the Surface Water Basins of İzmit Bay.”
Within the scope of the project, water quality parameters from the 12 basins supplying water to İzmit Bay were examined in detail for the period between 2009 and 2024. The measured data, covering nutrient elements, organic matter loads, physicochemical indicators, and annual pollutant load distributions, were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods.
The completed study has revealed, through scientific data, the key pressure factors affecting the ecosystem health of İzmit Bay. This comprehensive analysis provides a robust information base for the development of basin-based environmental management policies in the region.
Following the dissemination of the project results, meetings were held to ensure the continuation of collaboration between the two institutions. These discussions have resulted in the creation of a joint work plan. The next phase of the studies will focus on analytically modeling the basins under current conditions as well as under climate change scenarios.
With this study, GTU has contributed significant scientific data on the water quality of the İzmit Bay basins, offering valuable insights for the region’s environmental management. |
