November 25, 2025 GTU Office of Press and Public Relations Gebze Technical University (GTU) donates thousands of outdated telephone units, left idle after its transition from the CENTREX infrastructure to an IP-based phone system, to public institutions, preventing them from becoming electronic waste. Demonstrating GTU's commitment to achieving its declared sustainability goals, this initiative both relieves local institutions of a financial burden and reduces environmental impact.
Following the decommissioning of the old system, the phones that were no longer functional have been transferred to various institutions, primarily the Darıca and Dilovası District Directorates of National Education, within the framework of the Movable Property Regulation. Works with the Gebze and Çayırova District Directorates of National Education are also ongoing. This step clearly demonstrates the university’s responsibility in terms of resource efficiency and waste reduction.
GTU’s decision to donate the idle telephone units serves as a concrete example of how public institutions can manage technological transitions in ways that benefit both the environment and society. This approach not only provides cost advantages but also directly contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Responsible Consumption and Production, by reducing waste and supporting critical areas such as education. |
