Bringing Artificial Intelligence into the Classroom: New Horizons in Education at GTU

The transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) in education is discussed in a seminar organized at Gebze Technical University (GTU).

 

Held on November 3, 2025, in GTU’s Red Hall, the seminar titled “Bringing Artificial Intelligence into the Classroom” was organized under the coordination of the GTU Science Communication Office in collaboration with the Kocaeli Denizyıldızları Sectoral Center of Excellence. The event explored the role of AI in education, how the teaching profession is being reshaped by this transformation, and how AI can be effectively integrated into classroom practices. The seminar drew great interest from academics and teachers alike.

 

The event was attended by GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar; Darıca District Governor Yaşar Dönmez; Prof. Yusuf Sinan Akgül, Dean of GTU Faculty of Engineering; Murat Balay, Darıca District Director of National Education; Hacer Dursun, Director of the Denizyıldızları Sectoral Center of Excellence, and Barış Şimdi, Principal of Darıca Denizyıldızları Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School,  as well as academics and teachers.

 

In his opening remarks, Darıca District Governor Yaşar Dönmez emphasized Türkiye’s deep-rooted state tradition and the strength of its people, stating that education is the most crucial factor shaping the country’s future within the framework of the “Century of Türkiye” vision. Highlighting the key role teachers play in raising generations attuned to the requirements of the age and intertwined with technology, Dönmez noted that the use of artificial intelligence in education represents an innovative step forward for the nation and its youth.

 

GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar, in his speech, stated that artificial intelligence must not be seen as a threat but as a powerful tool to be utilized in education. Stressing the importance of sociology and psychology in educational processes, he underlined that teachers and academic staff must continually update themselves to meet the needs of the era. The Rector remarked, “We must not be afraid to use artificial intelligence; instead, we must see it as a lever that encourages us to rethink teaching, assignments, and project processes.”

 

Following the opening speeches, Prof. Yusuf Sinan Akgül, Dean of GTU Faculty of Engineering, delivered a presentation titled “A Brief Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” where he introduced the fundamental concepts of AI and shared examples of its applications in education.

 

In the second session, Asst. Prof. Gizem Mutlu-Gülbak from the Department of English Language Teaching at Biruni University presented her talk on “Redefining the Teaching Profession with Artificial Intelligence.”

 

The final session featured Lecturer Doğa Nalcı, who discussed “Artificial Intelligence Applications in Higher Education and the Integration of AI-Supported Educational Tools into the Curriculum.”

 

After a short break, the seminar concluded with a hands-on practice session held in the classrooms of the Faculty of Engineering, providing participants with new perspectives on the conscious and effective use of artificial intelligence in educational processes.
