Research Assistant Hilal Okur Erturaç from the Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences at Gebze Technical University (GTU) is awarded the prestigious TÜBİTAK 2214-A International Research Fellowship for PhD Students.

Hilal Okur Erturaç, a research assistant at GTU’s Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences, has achieved significant international recognition with her scientific project of critical importance. Her doctoral study titled “Investigation of the Past Flood Hydrology of Anatolian Rivers Using Fluvial Sediment Records: The Case of the Büyük Menderes River” has been selected for funding under one of the most distinguished support programs of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK), the 2214-A International Research Fellowship Program for Turkish Citizens (2024/1).

Thanks to this prestigious grant, Erturaç now has the opportunity to carry out her research at one of Europe’s leading scientific institutions. She has started her studies at the Paleohydrology and Climate Change Laboratory within the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas – CSIC). Her academic advisor is Prof. Gerardo Benito, a globally-renowned expert in the field.

Aiming to reconstruct the flood regimes of Anatolian river systems over thousands of years, this research is expected to provide critical data for water resource management and future flood risk modeling, especially at a time when the impacts of the climate crisis are increasingly evident.

This development, which further strengthens GTU’s international collaborations, once again highlights the global competitiveness of Turkish scholars.
