GTU Becomes a Bridge Between Scientists and Society

October 2, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations

GTU Science Communication Office makes significant contributions to science literacy in its region by carrying science beyond the campus through high school programs, internships, and publications implemented in a short time. Now, with an Artificial Intelligence seminar for teachers to be held on November 3, 2025, the Office aims to integrate this impact into the educational realm.

In line with the objectives of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), the Gebze Technical University (GTU) Science Communication Office continues to successfully fulfill its mission of bringing scientific knowledge to different segments of society. Since its establishment, the Office has consistently carried out projects that have significantly contributed to science literacy in the region and beyond. To ensure that science is not confined only to laboratories, the GTU Science Communication Office has completed four major projects in a short time.

From Campus to School: Science Ambassadors, launched in March 2025, introduced students in 11 high schools across Istanbul and Kocaeli to a wide range of current topics, from fundamental sciences to artificial intelligence. GTU academics shared knowledge in a clear and accessible language suitable for high school students.

Meet Science: High School Student Research Internship Program, 123 students from some of the country’s most prestigious high schools spent five days at the GTU campus, where laboratories were opened to them. This program inspired young minds on their journey to becoming the scientists of the future.

Academic Vision Article Series: The series featured twelve articles written by academics on popular scientific topics, published on GTU’s official LinkedIn account within four months, and reached thousands of readers.

Science Café: The event was held for the people of Gebze, where Prof. Yusuf Sinan Akgül delivered a talk titled “Artificial Intelligence: How Much of an Opportunity, How Much of a Threat?” in clear, jargon-free language.

GTU is now taking another concrete step toward the integration of science into the education system.

Bringing Artificial Intelligence Into the Classroom: Teachers have been officially invited through the Provincial Directorates of National Education to this seminar, scheduled for November 3, 2025. The program will cover topics such as "Teaching Redefined with Artificial Intelligence" and "Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education". By engaging with teachers, the most critical audience in the education ecosystem, this event aims to enhance the social impact of scientific developments.

GTU's Contribution to Science Communication:

Through all these initiatives, the GTU Science Communication Office successfully fulfills its core mission of “establishing a bridge between scientists and society.” While focusing on increasing scientific capacity through internships and high school programs that inspire youth, it also ensures more effective dissemination of knowledge to the public with open events such as Science Café and publications like Academic Vision. These efforts stand as the most concrete demonstration of GTU’s commitment to extending its scientific knowledge to the region and the country.
