September 26, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations Eyüp Aslan, a student at Gebze Technical University (GTU), wins first place in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s “Accessible and Connected Türkiye 2053 Idea Competition” (Ulaşan ve Erişen Türkiye 2053 Fikir Yarışması) with his artificial intelligence-based project “EcoBubble.”
In the third edition of the “Accessible and Connected Türkiye 2053 Interuniversity Idea Competition” organized this year by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (UAB), Eyüp Aslan, a student at GTU's Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, has been awarded for his innovative project.
With his project “EcoBubble: Intelligent Air Lubrication Optimization Software for Ships,” which has attracted great interest in the maritime field and is of critical importance for the sustainable transportation of the future, Aslan has achieved first place. The project aims to significantly contribute to reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the maritime sector by maximizing the efficiency of the Air Lubrication System (ALS) through artificial intelligence.
At the award ceremony held at the General Directorate of Highways' Ortaköy Social Facilities, the successful student received his prize from Dear Mr. Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure and GTU Rector Prof. Dr. Hacı Ali Mantar. Minister Uraloğlu and Rector Hacı Ali Mantar congratulated the young engineering candidate and emphasized the project’s value for the sector.
The competition, initiated by the UAB to encourage young talents to produce innovative and sustainable solutions, highlighted the strong interaction between the university and the sector through the remarkable achievement of the GTU student.
GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar expressed his satisfaction with Eyüp Aslan’s success, stating: “Our student’s achievement with ‘EcoBubble,’ an environmentally-friendly idea utilizing advanced technology, demonstrates the strength of our university’s research and development vision. It is a great source of pride for us that our young people are contributing to Türkiye’s ‘Accessible and Connected Türkiye 2053’ goals with such projects.”
EcoBubble is an AI-based optimization software aimed at reducing one of the biggest cost items in ship operations, fuel consumption. The air lubrication system reduces friction by creating a cushion of air bubbles between the ship’s hull and the water. EcoBubble determines the optimal parameters for this system to operate under instantaneous sea and ship conditions, thereby ensuring maximum efficiency and minimum emissions.
