Gebze Technical University (GTU), in collaboration with Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality (KBB), hosted a series of events within the scope of the European Mobility Week, held between September 16–22, 2024. Organized under the theme of “Shared Public Spaces” determined by the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye as the national coordinator, the program turned the university campus into a center for healthy living and social mobility.

The European Mobility Week activities began with a bicycle tour starting from Darıca Faruk Yalçın Zoo and heading to Gebze Technical University. At the GTU campus, participants first joined a stretching session guided by a professional trainer before the speeches by the officials. Afterwards, the officials and many participants had the opportunity to experience healthy living by walking through the campus’s naturally- forested areas.

In his speech, GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar emphasized the importance the university attaches to its mission of social impact. Thanking the Metropolitan Municipality for including the university in such a meaningful event, Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar underlined that the campus does not solely belong to academics and students. Highlighting the significance of university–community integration, he stated: “We need to adapt mobility into our lives. The campus will no longer be a place visited only by academics and students. We will be happy to see you inside it, because we live together in society.”

Ramūnas Janušauskas, Head of the Program Communication Section at the Delegation of the European Union to Türkiye, and Ertuğrul Şafak, Project and Finance Director of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye, also expressed their pleasure in being at the GTU campus, emphasizing the importance of bringing physical mobility into public spaces.

The events at GTU not only raised significant awareness for promoting an active lifestyle in Kocaeli but also presented a successful example of the university’s mission of social impact and integration with the community.
