The symposium held at GTU within the scope of the “SATREPS-MARTEST” Project, carried out in collaboration between Türkiye and Japan, addresses earthquake and tsunami risks, disaster-resilient societies, and future research plans.

Gebze Technical University (GTU) hosted a “Commemorative Symposium” on September 12, 2025, as part of the SATREPS-MARTEST Project (Marmara Research and Training Center for Disaster Resilient Structures), conducted in collaboration between Türkiye and Japan. The symposium, held at the GTU Congress and Cultural Center, brought together national and international scholars, public institution representatives, and researchers.

During the event, organized within the framework of the project that will continue between 2023–2028, the project outcomes achieved so far and future research plans were shared. In the opening session, Prof. Yoshiyuki Kaneda from Kagawa University delivered a speech, followed by Prof. Bülent Akbaş (GTU), who presented the vision of MARTEST. The symposium featured presentations on shake table experiments and earthquake engineering research plans conducted by Asst. Prof. Ahmet Anıl Dindar (GTU); tsunami risk assessment studies presented by Prof. Toshitaka Baba (Tokushima University), Asst. Prof. Ceren Özer-Sözdinler (GTU), Prof. Ahmet Yalçıner (METU), and Asst. Prof. Gözde Güney Doğan (METU); and real-time earthquake monitoring and data observation plans shared by Prof. Aitaro Kato (ERI), Asst. Prof. Ahmet Anıl Dindar, Tuğçe Ergün, PhD (KRDAE), and Filiz Tuba Kadirioğlu (AFAD).

In the afternoon session, Bursa Metropolitan Municipality presented its projects supported by JICA, while Prof. Yoshiyuki Kaneda and Prof. Selçuk Toprak (GTU) introduced disaster preparedness research plans. Prof.  Selçuk Toprak also discussed studies on disaster risk mitigation. The program concluded with an evaluation by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and a closing speech by JICA.

Supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), the project aims to build strong societies capable of coping with disasters. With GTU’s leadership, the studies seek to contribute to creating safer living environments in high-risk areas, particularly in the Marmara Region.
