September 9, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations In order to ensure that student societies’ activities at GTU are carried out more effectively and systematically, the Student Societies Coordination Office held its first meeting at the Congress and Cultural Center.
The meeting, organized at Gebze Technical University (GTU) Congress and Cultural Center, was attended by GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar, Vice-Rectors Prof. Elif Damla Arısan and Prof. Mahmut Durmuş, as well as deans, academic staff, branch managers, and student society advisors.
In his opening speech, Rector Prof.Hacı Ali Mantar highlighted the importance of student societies in university life. Emphasizing that students come together from different disciplines to improve teamwork, collaboration, and organizational skills, Prof. Mantar said: “Student societies contribute not only to the scientific but also to the social, cultural, and ethical development of our students. As a university, we will always stand by them throughout this process.”
During the meeting, Prof. Fatma Yüksel, GTU Student Societies Coordinator and Faculty Member of the Department of Chemistry, delivered the Academic Divisions presentation. She stated that, as of September 2025, there are 71 student societies at the university operating in the fields of science and technology, entrepreneurship, culture, sports, and arts. Prof. Yüksel noted that student societies enhance leadership, self-confidence, and communication skills, while also enabling students to explore their hobbies and contribute to their personal development.
Prof. Yüksel also explained that societies organize activities such as technical visits, workshops, congresses, conferences, and seminars in collaboration with the academic divisions, adding that they carry out projects and partnerships in areas such as social contribution, sustainability, inclusive life, and women and family studies. She further announced that membership records, decision logs, and inventory lists have been reintroduced to help societies work in a more systematic manner.
After emphasizing the importance of contributions from society advisors, the meeting concluded with reminders regarding event programs and evaluations of upcoming plans for the new semester, delivered by Çağatay Aktürk, GTU Press and Public Relations Manager. |
