GTU Guides High School Students on Their Scientific Journey

August 1, 2025 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations

Gebze Technical University (GTU) is hosting the “Meet Science: Research Internship Program,” which introduces high school students to the world of science. Organized by the GTU Science Communication Office, the program allows students to experience university life, explore academic research processes, and take their first steps into scientific thinking.

This year, 123 high school students joined the 5-day internship program, which started on July 7, 2025, and will continue until August 15, 2025. Throughout the program, students come together with faculty members in GTU laboratories and participate in ongoing scientific projects. By actively taking part in experiments, they observe each stage of the research process and get direct answers to the questions they are curious about. They gain laboratory experience in a wide range of disciplines, including physics, chemistry, molecular biology and genetics, and business, as well as biotechnology, nanotechnology, architecture, aerospace, computer, electronics, materials, and mechanical engineering. In this way, they have the opportunity to understand the nature of science and develop their scientific thinking skills.

One of the students in the program has highlighted the close interaction with faculty members, saying, “What I like most about this program is how much the professors are engaging with us and including us in every activity.” Another student has expressed satisfaction with the experience, stating, “Having the opportunity to closely observe the laboratory environment, seeing how theoretical knowledge is applied in practice, and experiencing the process firsthand was incredibly valuable and educational for me. The more I observed, the more I learned, and the more I learned, the more curious I became.”

With this program, GTU aims not only to open the doors of its laboratories, but also to open windows to science in the minds of young people. The “Meet Science” internship program helps students discover the fields they are interested in, take more informed steps into the academic world, and make a strong start on the path to becoming the scientists of the future.
