GTU’s Signature on the International Project Research Assistant Selin Öztürk-Demirkıran (PhD), a faculty member at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture at Gebze Technical University (GTU), has joined the working group of the EU-funded project titled CA23141 – Managing Artificial Intelligence in Archaeology (MAIA). The project focuses on the application of artificial intelligence in the field of archaeology and the management of digital data.
COST Application Approved Selin Öztürk-Demirkıran’s application within the framework of the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) program has been accepted. Accordingly, she joined the WG1 – State of the Art working group coordinated by the Polish Academy of Sciences, becoming part of an interdisciplinary research network.
Over 120 Scientists from 28 European Countries Bringing together more than 120 researchers from approximately 28 European countries, the MAIA project aims to develop AI applications in processes such as archaeological site detection, object identification, data extraction, and analysis by uniting experts from various disciplines. The project’s kick-off meeting was held in May 2025, hosted by the University of Seville, Spain.
Ethical and Technical Dimensions Addressed Together The project focuses not only on technological advancements, but also on the ethical, methodological, and technical dimensions of AI use in archaeological research. In this respect, MAIA offers an innovative and transformative approach not only from an academic standpoint, but also in terms of cultural heritage management.
Representing Türkiye in COST Actions Established in 1971 with the goal of bringing together researchers across Europe in scientific networks, COST counts Türkiye among its founding members. Demirkıran’s participation in this project is significant in terms of representing Türkiye’s academic research at the international level and enhancing its visibility. |
