The project titled “Evaluation of Fertilizer Combinations and Soil Conditioner Application for the Reduction of Agricultural N₂O Emissions in Wheat Production”, prepared as part of Research Assistant Eda Ceylan’s PhD dissertation in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU), is selected for funding by the TÜBİTAK 1002-A Rapid Support Module. The project is to be carried out under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Derya Ayral-Çınar from the Department of Environmental Engineering, with Asst. Prof. İlker Akmırza from the same department and Asst. Prof. Ümit Barış Kutman from the Institute of Biotechnology serving as project researchers.

The project scientifically investigates the environmental impacts of nitrogen-based fertilizers, which are commonly used in agriculture, with a particular focus on N₂O emissions—a greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential. Considering the role of N₂O in climate change, this research is regarded as a significant contribution to the development of environmentally-friendly fertilization strategies. The study aims to identify optimal fertilization methods by analyzing the effects of various fertilizer combinations and soil amendments on wheat production. The findings are expected to offer alternative solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture, thereby directly contributing to both environmental sustainability and national and international policy goals.

The strategic importance of the project is further enhanced by its alignment with the European Union Green Deal, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and Türkiye’s national development plans. The project stands out as an initiative anticipated to yield valuable outcomes both scientifically and practically in the context of agricultural sustainability and the fight against climate change.
