Gebze Technical University (GTU) hosts the Workshop on Artificial Intelligence in Medical Research, organized in collaboration with the University of Health Sciences (SBU), Kocaeli University of Health and Technology (KOSTU), and Yozgat Bozok University (YOBU). The workshop, held at the GTU Congress and Cultural Center, focuses on current applications of artificial intelligence in the field of medicine, research methodologies, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The event brings together academics, researchers, healthcare professionals, and technology experts.
The opening speeches were delivered, respectively, by Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Göktürk, Adviser to the Rector of GTU and Director of the Institute of Information Technologies; Prof. Elif Damla Arısan, Vice-Rector of GTU; Prof. Yunus Karakoç, Vice-Rector of the University of Health Sciences; Prof. Evren Yaşar, Rector of Yozgat Bozok University; and Prof. Muzaffer Elmas, Rector of Kocaeli University of Health and Technology. The speakers emphasized the transformative power of AI in healthcare technologies and the critical importance of interdisciplinary cooperation.
One of the highlights of the workshop was a keynote presentation by Prof. Erhan Akdoğan, Director of the Biomechatronics and Robotics Application and Research Center at Yıldız Technical University, titled: "The Only Way Forward for the Future of Medicine: Medical Cybernetics and AI-Driven Robotic Applications."
Another key session was the panel titled "Interdisciplinary Collaboration for AI in Medicine: Common Language, Common Success," moderated by Prof. Yusuf Sinan Akgül, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at GTU. Panelists included Assoc. Prof. Fatih Tarlak (GTU), Prof. Murat Baykara (SBU), Prof. Ahmet İlker Tekkeşin (SBU), Prof. Ayhan Dinç (Gülhane Military Medical Academy), Assoc. Prof. Özer Çelik, founder of WeAccess AI (Eskişehir Osmangazi University), and Asst. Prof. Sema Candemir (Eskişehir Technical University). They shared valuable insights on AI integration in healthcare, data sharing, and ethical considerations.
In the afternoon session, titled "Team Formation, Project Development, and Research Collaboration Opportunities," participants engaged in discussions focused on TÜBİTAK and TÜSEB funding calls, exploring possibilities for developing joint projects and forming multidisciplinary teams.
The workshop concluded with a closing and evaluation session. Throughout the day, existing projects were reviewed, allowing participants to reflect on both their strengths and areas for improvement. The need to enhance inter-university collaboration stood out as a key takeaway. Ongoing protocol efforts between GTU, KOSTU, YOBU, and SBU have reached their final stages. The workshop served as a meaningful platform for fostering interdisciplinary and multi-institutional project development. Participants expressed that the event significantly contributed to their knowledge and experience in the intersection of medicine and artificial intelligence. |
