Marmara Municipalities Union (MMU) announces the recipients of its 2025 Master’s Thesis Support Program. Among the five researchers selected for support is Research Assistant Ali Doğan Gümüşsoy from the GTU Institute of Transportation Technologies. His thesis, conducted under the supervision of Prof. Arif Çağdaş Aydınoğlu in the Smart City and Transportation Technologies Master's Program, is titled: "Sustainable Management of Transportation Services Within the Scope of Next-Generation Mobility Using Spatial Intelligence Methods: The Case of Public Transport in Istanbul-Kocaeli."
The thesis aims to contribute to strategic goals for improving public transportation systems by considering next-generation mobility concepts to reduce the burden of high transportation demand in urban areas. The research seeks to develop demand forecasting models for daily passenger flows at metro and suburban train stations using spatial intelligence methods. Comprehensive spatial and temporal datasets are created and used within a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment for various analyses and the development of forecasting models.
Through the research, the relationship between passenger demand and station locations in both existing and planned public transportation networks will be revealed using big data within the study area covering Istanbul and Kocaeli. The findings aim to support local governments in the transportation planning and implementation process by offering data-driven insights. By directing regional transportation demand more efficiently toward public transport stations, the study is expected to contribute to more sustainable investments in transportation infrastructure. It will also support greener, more economical, and more accessible urban mobility.
The Marmara Municipalities Union, the first municipal union in Türkiye, works to promote environmental awareness and sustainable urban planning approaches among local governments, while fostering cooperation in solving common municipal challenges. Through the Master’s Thesis Support Program, the MMU supports five thesis projects annually, with the goal of disseminating scientifically grounded solutions to urban problems across local administrations in the Marmara Region. Projects selected by the MMU Executive Committee receive financial support.
