Students of the Department of Bioengineering at Gebze Technical University (GTU) share their graduation and TÜBİTAK projects with industry representatives and academics.

The IV. Bioengineering Graduation Days, organized by the Gebze Technical University (GTU) Bioengineering Student Society (GTU BIOS), took place on June 2, 2025, at Hall No. 2 of the GTU Congress and Cultural Center. The event became an inspiring platform where graduating students showcased their graduation and TÜBİTAK projects.

The event began with a moment of silence and the Turkish National Anthem, followed by opening speeches delivered by GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar and BIOS Advisor Prof. Barış Binay.

Rector: “Bioengineering Is One of the Defining Fields of the Future”
In his speech, GTU Rector Prof. Hacı Ali Mantar emphasized that the graduation days were not just a celebration, but a strong example of collaboration between university, industry, and academia. The Rector stated, “Graduation projects demonstrate how our students successfully integrate theory with practice. These projects are of great importance for young engineers to express themselves and establish connections with the industry.” He highlighted bioengineering’s critical role in various areas ranging from genetics to health technologies and noted that GTU closely follows developments in this field, preparing students for the future through an interdisciplinary approach.

Prof. Binay: “We Provide Not Only Education, but Also Vision”
Prof. Barış Binay, Faculty Member at GTU Department of Bioengineering and GTU BIOS Advisor, emphasized in his speech that the department aims to provide students not only with academic knowledge, but also with sectoral vision. Binay stated, “We have not limited education to classroom lectures; we have offered students a hands-on learning environment through projects supported by TÜBİTAK and the European Union, in collaboration with industry experts. As a result, our department has become one of the most project-productive departments both at the university and national levels.” He also highlighted BIOS’s activities in social responsibility alongside academic achievements, stressing the importance of transforming knowledge into added value.

Following the opening speeches, Prof. Ebru Toksoy-Öner from Marmara University’s Department of Bioengineering and Akif Emre Kavak, R&D Manager at Nuvita Pharmaceuticals Inc., shared their experiences with students regarding their educational journeys and career planning.

During the event, students presented their graduation projects, reflecting the knowledge and experience they gained throughout their undergraduate education. Each project aimed to address a significant need in its field and attracted keen interest from attendees. More than thirty projects were showcased through poster presentations in the foyer area, where participants engaged directly with students to learn detailed information about the projects.

The IV. Bioengineering Graduation Days served as an event where young prospective engineers demonstrated their academic knowledge and project competencies, strengthening university-industry collaboration. This year’s organization was supported within the scope of the ÜNİDES Program, run by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to support university student societies.
