The Faculty of Architecture team from Gebze Technical University (GTU) is awarded the 5th Honorable Mention in Kadıköy Municipality's Service Building Architectural Project Competition, organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
The team, consisting of Research Assistants Emre Söylemez and Yiğit Can Yavuz from the Department of City and Regional Planning, Faculty of Architecture at GTU, along with students Gülben Kalak, Şeyda Sungur, and Caner Çakır, has earned the award for their project titled “A Municipality Opening to the City and Nature.”
The competition site, located around the Kurbağalıdere Corridor, was defined as an isolated landscape surrounded by transportation axes and dominated by hard surfaces and dense development, offering limited ecological and sociological benefits. Rather than proposing a conventional building merely adapted to existing conditions, the GTU team adopted a holistic approach aimed at reconnecting the area with Kurbağalıdere through a green corridor.
The proposed service building was designed to preserve the character of one of Kadıköy’s few open spaces, positioning itself in the background while prioritizing integration with urban life and emphasizing public spaces and greenery. The building was envisioned as a public venue where citizens could walk through, spend time around, and gather at any time of day.
This achievement highlights GTU’s commitment to design-oriented thinking, environmental sensitivity, and innovative planning approaches.
