Gebze Technical University (GTU) Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences Faculty Member Asst. Prof. Meltem Çelen, the project lead of “Determination of the Spatial Distribution, Inter-Environmental Transport Tendencies and Sources of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Different Environmental Settings of Antarctica Horseshoe Island,” is awarded support within the scope of the 2025 TÜBİTAK 1001 POLAR Call.
Within the project, participation will be made in the X. National Antarctic Science Expedition (TAE-X), during which air, water, and soil samples will be collected on Horseshoe Island, where our country’s scientific base is located. Concentrations of selected persistent organic pollutants will be determined and transfer mechanisms will be investigated. For this purpose, how the pollutants move at the air-water and air-soil interfaces and their long-range transport processes will be examined using modeling and thematic maps.
During the implementation and execution phases of the project, important responsibilities will be undertaken by faculty members of the Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences Prof. Salim Öncel, Assoc. Prof. M. Korhan Erturaç, Gebze Technical University Department of Environmental Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Banu Çetin, Yıldız Technical University faculty members Prof. Güleda Engin, Assoc. Prof. Hanife Sarı Erkan, Istanbul Technical University Department of Environmental Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Levent Kuzu, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Faculty Member Prof. Raif Kandemir, who will all play an active role in achieving the project outcomes according to their areas of expertise.
The project aims not only to produce scientific outputs, but also to strengthen TÜBİTAK’s soft power in polar regions, establish a sustainable research presence in these geographies, and contribute to the representation capacity in related national/international commissions. |
