Gebze Technical University’s (GTU) Accessibility Division and the student society of Community Volunteers (TOG) organize a meaningful event on the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day, observed on March 21. The first edition of the event, titled “21 Colors of the Butterfly,” is held at Kocaeli Darıca Kemal Ali Gül Primary School.

The event aimed to raise awareness for individuals with Down syndrome and to foster greater social sensitivity. Under the guidance of Instructor İrem Uz-Aslan from the Department of Physical Education and Sports, a fun activity course was designed to both support the children’s physical development and offer them an enjoyable time. A face painting activity organized by GTU students allowed the little ones to transform into the heroes of their dreams. Colorful activities and lively music throughout the event created cheerful moments for all participants.

Planned to become a tradition, the “21 Colors of the Butterfly” event is set to continue in the coming years with broader participation. In a statement from the GTU Accessibility Division, it was noted: “We will continue our efforts to ensure individuals with Down syndrome have a stronger presence in social life. This year’s event was just the beginning; in the following years, it is planned to grow even further.”

Volunteers participating in the event contributed to increasing awareness for individuals with Down syndrome and highlighted the importance of love and solidarity.
