Academics and students from Gebze Technical University (GTU) holds the 3rd Science, Art, and Sports Festival for children affected by the earthquake under the slogan "The Butterfly Effect in Social Impact" in Hatay. The festival, held from February 17-21, 2025, takes place at Nizamaettin Özkan Primary School and İnönü Secondary School in the Katar 2 Container City in Hatay, with a team of 43 people from GTU.
Under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Fatma Karaoğlu-Ceyhan and Prof. Mustafa Türkmen, and accompanied by Asst. Prof. Merve Mocan and singer Ünal Dursun, the festival offered the children workshops in robotics, science, design, coding, handicrafts, and musical activities. GTU students Abdülkerim Görgen and Bala Nur Ay were in charge of workshops, Melike Taşer handled promotions, Nihal Çakmakçı managed communication, Kerem Özer took care of materials, and Yurdagül Çalapverdi and Ahmet Efe Çırakoğlu were responsible for accommodation in the general organization. Earthquake-affected students experienced each workshop in groups of 8-10 during class hours and enjoyed handicrafts, music, and dance activities during breaks.
In the Robotics Workshop, the children explored the question, "How is a remote-controlled car made?" stepping into the world of engineering. The Science Workshop held separate experiments for primary and secondary school students. In the Design Workshop, with the theme "The Role of My Imagination," the children embarked on a journey to their imagination. The Coding Workshop taught the basics of algorithms, while in the Handicrafts Workshops, activities like mosaic painting and glass painting were carried out. In the Music and Sports Workshop, children experienced rhythm, melody, and improvisation through music.
The festival helped children experience science, art, and sports, contributing to their development.
In the Robotics Workshop, the team included Muhammet Serdar Şahin, Beyzanur Bilir, Emre İlhan Şenel, Ayşegül Akdemir, Alevnaz Bal, İsmail Yazıcıoğlu, Sudenaz Uçar, Yüksel Emre Karabulut, Abdukerim Görgen.
In the Science Workshop, the team members were Kerem Özer, İlhami Pekdemir, İrem Tekin, Zülal Tosun, Nil Çakıcı, and Ayşenur Akbulut.
In the Design Workshop titled "The Role of My Imagination," the team consisted of Bala Nur Ay, Melike Nur Taşer, Esad Hamza Değirmenci, Berre Aruç, Cansu İşcan, Sıla Toksoy, Zeynep Yücebağ, İrem Gündüz.
In the Coding Workshop, the team was led by Yurdagül Çalapverdi, Sude Tatar, Ahmet Burak Unutmaz, Ahmet Efe Çırakoğlu, Ahmet Korkmaz, Alperen Zirek, Berk Ertem, İsa Savcı.
In the Handicrafts Workshops, Feride Van, Zeynep Zülal Yıldırım, İclal Döndü, and Dr. Lecturer Merve Mocan contributed.
In the Music and Sports Workshop, the team included Eylül Gözde Akar, Mert Şen, singer Ünal Dursun, Zeynep Çoban, Tuna Orhan, Mehmet Tuğrul Şen.
The festival, prepared with the contributions of GTU Social Impact Coordination Office, Directorate of Health, Culture and Sports, and Support Services Coordination Office, was sponsored by Şişecam as the main sponsor. Other sponsors included Polisan and Adel as stationery sponsors, Getap, İmes, and Sima Aluminum for transportation, and Milhans as the food sponsor. Tuzla Municipality provided in-kind support.
