GTU Faculty of Architecture’s "Water-Ground" themed studio stands out as a platform where architecture, nature, and technology converge.

The Faculty of Architecture at Gebze Technical University (GTU) is starting a new chapter at the intersection of architecture and ecology. The first-year Architectural Design Studio, conducted within the Responsive Ground Research Lab, will focus on the transformative power of water this semester under the title "WATER-GROUND: Atlas for a Lagoon," working on Tuzla Kamil Abduş Lagoon Park.

The studio aims to explore how architecture can adapt to environmental data and bio-receptive design principles by considering water not only as a physical element, but also in its ecological, cultural, and structural dimensions. Throughout this process, participating students will both interpret the local texture and develop innovative design approaches. Another noteworthy aspect of the project is its integration of undergraduate students with master's and doctoral students, fostering knowledge exchange and mentorship opportunities across different academic levels.

Team and Advisors

The studio will be led by Assoc. Prof. Fitnat Cimşit-Koş and Res. Asst. Seben Aşkın-Kütükçü, with advisory support from Asst. Prof. Barış Kutman from the Institute of Biotechnology. Additionally, guest contributors include Özgür Kavurmacıoğlu in Parametric Design, Betül Ozar (PhD) on Artificial Intelligence as an Environmental Factor in the Design Process, and Master Architect Zehra Delerel in Bio-Tectonic Modeling, who will participate as speakers and jury members.

Goals and Expectations

This new chapter aims to redefine the relationship between architecture and nature. During their studies, students will develop projects particularly focused on reviving urban biodiversity and creating sustainable living spaces. This process will not only strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, but also equip future architects with environmental awareness and innovative design skills.

This innovative initiative by the Faculty of Architecture offers exciting opportunities in urban transformation and ecological design. Participants will have the chance to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical applications, contributing both to the local community and the environment.
