At the panel held with the participation of GTU KUAM, the profound impact of major disasters, such as earthquakes, on women are discussed.
On the anniversary of the "Disaster of the Century", which devastated 11 provinces and plunged the entire country into mourning in February 2023, Gebze Municipality organized a panel titled "The Triangle of Disaster, Women, and Health" to address the effects of disasters on women and health. The panel took place at the main hall of Gebze Cultural Center, located in the city square.
Following the opening speech by Gebze Mayor Zinnur Büyükgöz, the session was moderated by Prof. Fatma Yüksel, Director of the Women and Family Studies Application and Research Center (KUAM) at Gebze Technical University (GTU). Asst. Prof. Ülgen Mert-Tuğsal, a faculty member at GTU’s Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, participated as a speaker. The discussion focused on the psychological and physical effects of major disasters like earthquakes on women.
Speakers highlighted the difficulties disaster victims—particularly women—face in accessing healthcare services after a disaster. They emphasized the need to strengthen specialized intervention and training programs for women's health. Additionally, Gebze Municipality Search and Rescue Team (GEAK) showcased their relief efforts carried out during that period. |
