GTU Academic Prof. Taşkın Kavzoğlu Becomes a Full Member of TÜBA

The full members of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) are determined during the 61st General Assembly held over the weekend. Prof. Taşkın Kavzoğlu, a faculty member at Gebze Technical University's (GTU) Department of Geomatics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, gets elected as a full member.

 

The 61st General Assembly of TÜBA took place on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at The Ankara Hotel, with the participation of TÜBA members, university rectors, and institutional leaders.

 

The program commenced with a welcoming speech by TÜBA President Prof. Muzaffer Şeker and continued with remarks from Muhammet Kasım Gönüllü, Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology. Prof. Yusuf Sinan Akgül, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, GTU, contributed to the General Assembly Conference with his presentation titled "Artificial Intelligence and Its Impacts on Higher Education: Risks and Opportunities."

 

Having served as an associate member of TÜBA for nine years, Faculty Member Prof. Taşkın Kavzoğlu from the Department of Geomatics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at GTU has been elected as one of the four new full members during the TÜBA General Assembly with the approval of the TÜBA Council as a result of the secret ballot held along with the interviews made in line with the positive reports received from five domestic and five international faculty members who are experts in their fields. Prof. Kavzoğlu not only has become the first GTU academic to be elected as a TÜBA full member, but also the first academic in the field of geomatics engineering to achieve this distinction.

 

Prof. Kavzoğlu specializes in remote sensing, artificial intelligence, machine learning-based digital image processing, monitoring and analyzing the effects of climate change, and tracking the impacts of natural disasters. He is also the author of the book Classification Methods for Remotely Sensed Data, published globally in 2024 and cataloged by the libraries of prestigious universities, including MIT, Columbia University, Princeton University, Ohio State University, and Purdue University (https://search.worldcat.org/title/1433988416).
