December 5, 2024 - GTU Basın ve Halkla İlişkiler Müdürlüğü

Turkish Preparatory Class of Gebze Technical University (GTU) celebrates December 5, World Turkish Coffee Day, with a vibrant event. Turkish coffee, which is included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List, is specially prepared for students from Ethiopia, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, and Colombia.

During the Fall Semester of the 2024-2025 Academic Year, foreign national students and trainees from Ethiopia, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, and Colombia, who are learning A1 level of Turkish at GTU's Continuing Education Application and Research Center, experienced the unique flavors of Turkish coffee, Turkish simit, Turkish delight, and Turkish baklava as part of the World Turkish Coffee Day celebrations. Sharing their impressions, the participants expressed their admiration for the local delicacies, noting that Turkish coffee has a distinct flavor compared to Ethiopian and Yemeni coffee and is among the must-try local specialties. The event, aimed at promoting Turkish culture, was organized by Melike Erdil (PhD), an instructor at the Turkish Preparatory Department.

Turkish coffee was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List on December 5, 2013. Since then, December 5 has been celebrated annually as "World Turkish Coffee Day" to preserve the culture and tradition of Turkish coffee.
