An event titled “From Past to Present: The History of Gebze Technical University” is held on November 28, 2024 at the Gebze Technical University (GTU) Congress Center, organized with the support of the Social Impact Coordination Office. The event features a comprehensive panel and workshop program focusing on the scientific, industrial, and technological heritage of Kocaeli. It is organized as part of the YEDEP project, jointly prepared by the Eurasian Journalists Association and UMSİDER, with the support of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and Kocaeli City Council.
The opening speech was delivered by journalist and documentary filmmaker İsmail Kahraman. During their speeches, Gebze Chamber of Commerce President Abdurrahman Aslantaş and GTU Rector Adviser and Social Impact Coordinator Prof. Meral Elçi emphasized the significance of the project, describing the preservation of such a valuable archive as an important mission.
The panel delved into the region’s industrialization process, its pioneering role in scientific and technological advancements, and its potential for the future. The speakers included university professors, industry representatives, and expert historians. İsmail Kahraman moderated the panel, providing participants with critical insights into Kocaeli’s transformation in the fields of industry and technology.
The event also featured the presentation of archives and documents prepared under the Kocaeli Science, Technology, and Industry History project. In addition to documentary screenings, participants were involved in sharing and transferring archives, contributing to the creation of a significant repository in the university’s history.
Key events and figures that played pivotal roles in Kocaeli’s industrial development were thoroughly examined during the panel. At the event’s conclusion, it was emphasized that laying the foundations of an industrial, science, and technology museum planned to be established at GTU would preserve the region’s scientific and industrial heritage for future generations.
This event shed light on the rich history of Kocaeli while once again highlighting the university’s continued leadership in academic, scientific, and cultural activities.
