Institute of Biotechnology, Gebze Technical University (GTU), shares its research in algae biotechnology with scientists at an international workshop.

Assoc. Prof. Müge İşleten-Hoşoğlu and Asst. Prof. Ümit Barış Kutman, faculty members from the Institute of Biotechnology at GTU, participated as invited speakers at the "Regional Workshop on Algal Production and Biotechnology," organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the Central Asian and Caucasus Fisheries and Aquaculture Commission (CACFish), held at the Dedeman Istanbul Hotel on November 27-28, 2024. At the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Müge İşleten-Hoşoğlu delivered a talk titled “Algae as a Functional Food Source,” and Asst. Prof. Ümit Barış Kutman presented “Integrating Algae and Aquatic Plants into Sustainable Agrifood Strategies.”

The workshop brought together approximately 40 researchers from several Eurasian countries, including Türkiye, Croatia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Algae biotechnology was discussed through an interdisciplinary approach. Recent developments and future perspectives on the use of algae in agriculture, food, food supplements, and the pharmaceutical industry, areas directly related to the GTU Institute of Biotechnology’s specializations in medical biotechnology, plant biotechnology, and industrial biotechnology, were shared. The importance of algae biotechnology for sustainability and green transformation was highlighted, with examples of circular bioeconomy practices provided. The event offered significant opportunities for building an international research network, and researchers exchanged ideas to develop new projects and collaborations.
