November 25, 2024 - GTU Office of Press and Public Relations
The TÜBITAK-supported workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence Applications and Modelling in Food and Bioengineering” was held at Gebze Technical University (GTU) Congress and Cultural Center on November 21-22, 2024. The workshop brought together academics and researchers to discuss the potential and current applications of artificial intelligence technologies in food and bioengineering.
The workshop started with the presentation “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” by Prof. Yusuf Sinan Akgül, Dean of GTU Faculty of Engineering, followed by Prof. Fernando Pérez Rodríguez's speech on biodigitalization and artificial intelligence. During the two-day event, the applications of machine learning and deep learning methods in food safety, bioprocess modeling, microbiology and bioinformatics were discussed in detail. The potential of artificial intelligence applications in improving food quality, optimizing bioengineering processes and data analytics was presented.
During the workshop, face-to-face and online sessions were organized on topics such as “Machine Learning in the Food Industry,” “Modeling Biological Systems with Deep Learning” and “Reducing Food Waste with Artificial Intelligence.” In addition, academics from Türkiye and abroad shared their innovative work with the participants and exchanged information.
Expert speakers included Assoc. Prof. Fatih Tarlak, Asst. Prof. Pınar Pir, and Asst. Prof. Özgün Yücel from GTU. Prof. Dr. Fatih Tarlak, Dr. Lecturer Pınar Pir and Dr. Özgün Yücel from GTU, as well as many academics from Spain, USA, Brazil, India, China, and Türkiye. In the workshop, artificial intelligence-supported microbial safety, digital tools that improve product quality and innovative methods to reduce nutrient losses were presented to the participants.
The workshop created a powerful knowledge-sharing platform for leading scientists and students in the field and demonstrated the potential of artificial intelligence in food science and bioengineering.
Workshop Chair Assoc. Prof. Fatih Tarlak stated at the end of the event that the workshop strengthened scientific collaborations and emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence technologies in different disciplines.
This TÜBİTAK-supported event brought together national and international academics and paved the way for scientific collaborations.
