Students from the Department of Architecture at Gebze Technical University (GTU) conduct fieldwork between October 14-20, 2024, as part of their "Analysis of Historic Buildings" course. The work aims to document cultural heritage in Kocaeli/Tavşancıl, Balıkesir/Ayvalık, and Istanbul/Eyüpsultan.
During the fieldwork, students performed architectural measurements and photographic documentation of traditional civil architecture residences and historical religious structures. They employed both traditional and advanced technological measurement and documentation techniques. In Ayvalık, GTU's undergraduate geomatics engineering students supported the architecture students with total station measurements, while the Ayvalık Municipality contributed through laser scanning.
The students documented 17 cultural heritage structures, including 14 residences and 3 religious buildings. They gained practical experience in measurement techniques while observing and experiencing local culture, architectural plan typologies, and traditional wooden and masonry construction techniques. Following the fieldwork, during the fall and spring semesters, students will prepare measured drawings, restitution, and restoration projects and reports for these buildings. This effort will document previously unrecorded cultural heritage and indirectly provide project support to property owners and local governments, contributing to the community.
Gebze Technical University, Ayvalık Municipality, Dilovası Municipality, and Eyüpsultan Municipality supported the students with logistics, including transportation, accommodation, and meals, throughout the fieldwork. |
