The projects by Research Assistant Assoc. Prof. Hülya Akdemir from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Gebze Technical University (GTU) to be granted funding by TÜSEB and TÜBİTAK.
Assoc. Prof. Hülya Akdemir, Research Assistant at GTU, leading a project titled “Biosynthesis of 4-Vinylcatechol with Antioxidant Properties via Metabolic Engineering and Determination of Antitumor Response,” has become entitled to receive funding from TÜSEB. The project, in collaboration with Research Assistant Hüseyin Balcı, PhD, and Research Assistant Arzu Aysan, aims to develop strategies for the high-yield heterologous production of 4-vinylcatechol (VCAT), an antioxidant derived from the decarboxylation of phenolic acids from plant secondary metabolites, in E. coli. The research falls under TÜSEB’s Emergency Research and Development Project Support Program.
Additionally, another project led by Assoc. Prof. Hülya Akdemir, with contributions from Hüseyin Balcı, PhD, and Research Assistant Gamze Şeker, PhD, and involving master’s students Tugay Türkyılmaz and Zeynep Akyol as scholarship students, has been approved for funding by TÜBİTAK’s 1002 Rapid Support Module. This project, titled “Investigation of the Efficacy of Different Glutathione S-Transferase Enzymes in Heterologous Anthocyanin Biosynthesis,” aims to develop production strategies starting from precursor molecules of natural pigments like anthocyanins, which are beneficial for health, for large-scale production.
