What is a Peer Tutor?
A peer tutor is an undergraduate student at a university who has successfully completed the course he/she will assist in, aims to contribute to the academic success of his/her friends, and takes on a guiding and supportive role.
What are the Duties of a Peer Tutor?
Guiding: Instead of solving the questions, he/she asks guiding questions so that students can find their own solutions.
Focusing on Unclear Topics: Instead of explaining the entire content of the course, he/she focuses on the topics that students have difficulty understanding.
Producing Sample Questions: If necessary, he/she produces or finds sample questions to convey the aspects of the subject that are not understood.
Encouraging Independent Learning: He/she makes his/her friends feel that the responsibility for learning the course is theirs and that he/she is only a guide. He/she does not solve his/her friends' homework or help them do their projects.
Listening and Understanding: He/she listens carefully to his/her friends' questions and tries to determine what they do not understand.
A peer tutor does not act as an assistant or student worker; his/her aim is to support his/her friends to be more successful academically.
What are the characteristics sought in students who will be selected as peer tutors?
It is preferred that the peer tutors to be assigned are selected from among students who have taken the course in the previous term and successfully completed it, have fresh knowledge, and are questioning and inquisitive.
