Within the scope of the Faculty of Architecture elective course MIMF 316 Design for All, a study trip to the Turkcell Dialogue Museum located in Istanbul Gayrettepe Metro was organized on 4 April 2022. The ‘Dialogue in Darkness’ and ‘Dialogue in Silence’ exhibitions within the scope of the museum were experienced by the students accompanied by visually and hearing impaired guides. In the Design for All course, which is conducted by Lecturer Nehir Taştan and Research Assistant Ahmet Furkan Keleş, lecturers of the Faculty of Architecture, Department of Industrial Design, it is aimed for students to gain a new perspective by empathising with different human abilities and disabilities in line with the principles of Universal Design. In line with this purpose, students experienced the ‘Dialogue in the Dark’ exhibition in a completely dark environment, guided by visually impaired guides and exploring their different senses other than sight on the 60-minute track. They experienced Istanbul in a ‘new and different’ way by touching, smelling and hearing in the dark. At the ‘Dialogue in Silence’ exhibition, students experienced non-verbal communication in a completely silent environment with hearing impaired guides. Students experienced how facial expressions and body language can be used effectively and what can be achieved with senses other than hearing. With the exhibitions experienced within the scope of the Design for All course, students were able to leave their prejudices about themselves and their environment behind and develop their empathy skills. |
